The Weight of Millions of Years Flowing, 2022.

How to help a sculpture to float through the millions of years that compose it? Beine is a sculpture by the Czech artist Eva Kmentová. It looks heavy and light at the same time as it is made of cement but it presents unfinished legs. Among the main materials of cement are limestone, clay and iron, and each of these elements took millions of years to be generated by geological processes. The sculpture contains all the weight of time of its materials, and perhaps more than looking for the missing parts, as an incomplete figure, it would like to dematerialize until it floats.
We used photogrammetry to make a 3D model of Beine, a sculpture that is part of the Kunstmuseum Bochum collection, Germany. Then we unfold it into four two-dimensional images. Each image is a flag that flies on the facade of the museum.
Here, unfolding form is an act of unfolding time. It is an invitation to remember the geological time contained in the materials used in the arts. It is also an invitation to share the perception with which Eva describes the beginning of her artistic practice, as “a great childish joy, or more probably the feeling of something beautiful to come”.

¿Cómo ayudar a una escultura a flotar a través de los millones de años que la componen? Beine es una escultura de la artista checa Eva Kmentová. Parece pesada y ligera al mismo tiempo, ya que está hecha de cemento pero presenta unas piernas inacabadas. Entre los principales materiales del cemento están la piedra caliza, la arcilla y el hierro, y cada uno de estos elementos tardó millones de años en generarse por procesos geológicos. La escultura contiene todo el peso del tiempo de sus materiales, y quizá más que buscar las partes que le faltan, como figura incompleta, quisiera desmaterializarse hasta flotar.
Utilizamos fotogrametría para hacer un modelo 3D de Beine, una escultura que forma parte de la colección del Kunstmuseum Bochum, Alemania. Después la desplegamos en cuatro imágenes bidimensionales. Cada imagen es una bandera que ondea en la fachada del museo.
Aquí, desplegar la forma es un acto de desplegar el tiempo. Es una invitación a recordar el tiempo geológico contenido en los materiales usados en las artes. También es una invitación a compartir la percepción con la que Eva describe el inicio de su práctica artística, como “una gran alegría infantil, o más probablemente la sensación de algo hermoso por venir”.
