Clastique
The series Clastique conceptually and formally studies the anatomical models made by Dr. Louis Auzoux, a nineteenth-century French anatomist. Originally, these papier-mâché models were affordable teaching materials for educational and scientific institutions. Today, they are invaluable pieces in European museums. In Clastique, I rethink their use and meaning in order to underline the different processes through which Western knowledge is legitimized.

La serie Clastique estudia conceptual y formalmente los modelos anatómicos elaborados por el Dr. Louis Auzoux, un anatomista francés del siglo XIX. Originalmente, estos modelos de papel maché eran materiales didácticos asequibles para instituciones educativas y científicas. Actualmente, son piezas invaluables de museos europeos. En Clastique replanteo su uso y significado para subrayar los distintos procesos de legitimación del conocimiento occidental.

In Latin American and Caribbean cultures, one of the most powerful amulets is the one that protects against the evil eye. The amulet must be made by oneself or by someone very close for its effect to be lasting and effective. In the piece Mal de ojo, I digitally restored an emblematic model by Dr. Auzoux and printed it in 3D. This small sculpture, as an amulet, embodies a form of thought deeply rooted in the Americas and widely dismissed by the Western world.

En culturas latinoamericanas y del Caribe, uno de los amuletos más poderosos es aquel que protege contra el mal de ojo. El amuleto debe ser confeccionado por uno mismo o por una persona muy cercana para que su efecto sea perdurable y efectivo. En la pieza Mal de ojo, restauré digitalmente un modelo emblemático del Dr. Auzoux y lo imprimí en 3D. Esta pequeña escultura, como amuleto, encarna un pensamiento fuertemente arraigado en América y ampliamente desestimado por el mundo occidental.

In recent statements, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, compared the European Union to a “garden,” while considering that “most of the rest of the world is a jungle.” For a long time, heart-extraction sacrifice was the best example used to label an entire ancestral culture as violent and savage. This small bronze heart is another representative model from the work of Dr. Auzoux. It was made using the lost-wax technique, already known and practiced in Mesoamerica, from a 3D-printed wax model. It is exhibited in a horizontal position, alluding to the position it would have before a sacrifice.

En recientes declaraciones, el jefe de la Diplomacia europea, Josep Borrell, comparó a la Unión Europea con un “jardín”, mientras que consideró que “la mayor parte del resto del mundo es una jungla”. Durante mucho tiempo, el sacrificio por extracción de corazón fue el mejor ejemplo para tachar de violenta y salvaje a toda una cultura ancestral. Este pequeño corazón de bronce es otro modelo representativo del trabajo del Dr. Auzoux. Fue elaborado utilizando la técnica de la cera perdida, ya conocida y practicada en Mesoamérica, a partir de un modelo de cera impreso en 3D. Es exhibido en posición horizontal, haciendo alusión a la posición que tendría antes de un sacrificio.
